Hives (Urticaria)
Hives, also known as urticaria, are raised, itchy bumps or welts in the skin that appear suddenly, and wax and wane in appearance. They may be triggered by infections, medications including over-the-counter pain relievers, and other viruses and sensitivities. For those who are symptomatic, antihistamines are considered first-line therapy. Rarely hives may be severe, persistent, or associated with difficulty breathing or swelling of the lips or tongue. Identifying and avoiding triggers can help prevent future episodes.
