Itch (Pruritus)
Itch, or pruritus, is a common symptom that can be caused by dry skin, allergies, skin conditions like eczema, or even chronic medical diseases like diabetes and thyroid disease. Sometimes, itch occurs with a visible rash, but it can also happen without any obvious skin changes. Scratching may provide temporary relief but can lead to skin damage, infection and can worsen symptoms. Successful treatments depend on the underlying cause and may include moisturizers, antihistamines, or prescription creams. If itch is severe, lasts more than a few weeks, or is associated with other symptoms, it is important to see a board-certified dermatologist for evaluation. Managing underlying conditions and avoiding irritants can help reduce itch and improve quality of life.
